This journal reading examines “Art and Automation” from the book Art and Cosmotechnics (2021) by philosopher Yuk Hui. Yuk Hui is a leading contemporary scholar in philosophical, art, and comparative studies that bridge Western and Eastern traditions, offering a critical perspective on the legacy of modernity. In “Art and Cosmotechnics,” he underscores the pivotal role of art in reshaping human-machine relations, and provides a fresh look at the origins of human and machine intelligences through cross-cultural and interdisciplinary lenses. Given the omnipresence of artificial intelligence in our era, his book highlights the pressing need to recognize technodiversities in different cultures. In this journal reading, I unpack Yuk Hui’s core ideas and facilitate a discussion on cosmotechnics and localities in the Korean contexts.
