Research on methodology for generating real-time bio-signal-based data sculptures using EEG device

M.S. Thesis by Yeeun Han (2023)

[Abstract]
The purpose of this research is to study data sculpture, which is a sculpture created and stored as data in a digital virtual space and exhibited in a virtual or real space, and to propose a data sculpture design based on real-time brain wave data. According to previous studies and works on data art and computer sculpture, we defined data sculpture and analyzed its characteristics and production process to find the aesthetic meaning of data sculpture. On this basis, we analyzed the changes in the role of the creator according to the type of data sculpture production. Then, we discussed the significance of sculptures created based on EEG data, summarized previous studies and examples of works, and proposed a generative data sculpture design using EEG data. By revealing the characteristics of data sculpture and changes in the role of the artist through the proposed design of data sculpture, we sought to understand sculpture in the digital age and the aesthetic and technical understanding of future sculpture.
